Cars can also be wonderfully photogenic. And they are great to photograph because they are patient and sit still for you.
I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph David Van Duzer’s 1959 Mercedes Benz 220S in our nations capitol. The photos were submitted to the Mercedes Benz “The Star” magazine, and they featured 18 of my photos in a 10 page spread plus the cover, the Contents page, and the back page of their July, 2019, edition. Unfortunately, the photos on their website do not reflect the colors or the original photos, or the print edition, so please go to my gallery to see the originals.
As with architectural photography, the quality of light is critical, and often early morning shoots offer the best opportunities, especially when traffic is light. An advantage of automotive photography over architectural photos is that you can reposition the car, whereas building owners generally frown on photographers who attempt to reposition their buildings. đŸ˜‰
Car shows are a great venue for photographers, except for the crowds, and the fact that the hoods are almost always open. Thankfully, with a little (or a lot of) Photoshop trickery, I can take a mediocre photo like this:
And turn it in to this, by eliminating the background clutter, and blurring the trees.
While photographing stationary cars is fun, action shots are much more challenging, and convey the real automotive experience. I enjoy visiting race tracks to photograph various cars and events. By using a long shutter speed and panning to follow the car, you get the sense of motion by blurring the background and the wheels. This takes a lot of practice, but is worth the effort.
If you have a special car, then display boards are a great way to to let people know all about your car, and what makes it special. I can provide these services as well, from the photos, to the layout and the printing.
